Police say a car stolen from Boston slammed into a Cambridge biotechnology building Monday afternoon, seriously injuring a person inside.
According to police, the Porsche was reported stolen from Dalton Street in Boston around 12:45 p.m. Cambridge police later spotted the vehicle near Massachusetts Avenue and attempted a motor vehicle stop, but the driver sped away.
“The vehicle involved took off down Albany St. at a high rate of speed,” Cambridge police said. “Our officers did not pursue it out of safety concerns and only learned of the crash from later 9-1-1 calls.”
Shortly afterward, the car was seen driving the wrong way on a one-way street before crashing into the Intellia Therapeutics building on Waverly Street. “I was busy like hiding, from debris,” said a witness identified as Katie. “I fully turned my body.”
Police said the car also struck a tree, a bike rack, and a water pipe.
One witness told WBZ-TV the driver appeared dazed but conscious and attempted to walk away from the scene.
“Well, he was going way too fast, and then apparently he ran away, said some other guys who saw him,” Katie said.
Another person inside the building suffered serious injuries and was taken to the hospital. Crews continued working Monday night to remove the car from the building.
Police arrested the driver and transported him to a nearby hospital. He was later identified as 57-year-old David Powell of Roslindale.
Cambridge police said Powell will face charges including leaving the scene of a crash causing personal injury and receiving stolen property. Boston police may add additional charges connected to the stolen vehicle.
