Jaquan Hassan Brehon, 26, was sentenced to one and a half years in prison after pleading guilty to fraud charges resulting from a scam that took place at a Norfolk gas station.
The crime, which involves illegally acquiring a Navy Federal Credit Union loan, took place on November 17, 2023, at a gas station on Newtown Road in Norfolk.
Brehon opened a $6,000 loan on the victim’s cellphone without their knowledge, getting them to refund $5,000 under the premise of accidentally sending too much money. The fraud occurred after Brehon and an associate approached the victim at the petrol station, where he claimed to need assistance purchasing gas.
Brehon used the victim’s phone to apply for the loan, which was authorized and funded without the victim’s knowledge. He first claimed to have sent the victim $60 but later misled the victim into believing he had sent $6,000.
After being alerted to the fraud by a family member, the victim approached Brehon and his associate, who then departed the scene in a car, leaving behind an unsuccessful attempt to withdraw an additional $1,000 in cash.
Detectives obtained arrest warrants for Brehon after a photo lineup with the victim, and Virginia Beach detectives apprehended him a month later.
On November 6, 2025, Brehon pleaded guilty to three felonies: acquiring money under false pretenses, computer fraud, and identity fraud. As part of his plea agreement, he received a 1.5-year sentence with an extra 9.5-year suspension contingent on completing supervised probation.
Judge Jennifer L. Fuschetti accepted Brehon’s plea agreement, which stipulated that he pay $5,000 in reparation to the victim. Brehon’s probation will last three years, with a five-year condition for good behavior following his release.
Commonwealth’s Attorney Ramin Fatehi issued a warning about the scam, saying, “Mr. Brehon cynically targeted a good Samaritan who believed Mr. Brehon’s lies, only to be defrauded and victimized. ” I strongly advise any decent Samaritan, particularly those with Navy Federal Credit Union accounts, to never provide a stranger access to their financial applications or information. “Be kind and charitable, but also cautious.”
According to court documents, Brehon is currently in the Chesapeake City Jail.
