Parolee Caught With Stolen Handgun During Ogle County Traffic Stop Receives 8-year Prison Sentence

A Chicago man has been sentenced to 8 years in prison on weapons charges after Illinois State Troopers discovered him with a stolen semi-automatic during an Ogle County traffic stop.

According to Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock, on March 25, 2025, a trooper stopped a Chrysler 200 along Interstate 39.

John Carew, 27, was detained for driving on a revoked license.

When the trooper inspected the car, he discovered a stolen Taurus semi-automatic revolver disguised in a bag of cannabis.

Carew was on parole at the time for previous offenses in Cook and Stephenson counties.

On Wednesday, he pled guilty to unauthorized possession of a weapon by a felon and was sentenced to 8 years in prison by the Illinois Department of Corrections.
