A LaPorte man will serve over eight years in federal prison after being convicted of dealing drugs and illegally having a gun.
Edwardo Trevino, 43, was sentenced on March 19 after a jury found him guilty of trafficking methamphetamine, possessing meth with intent to distribute, and unlawfully carrying a weapon as a convicted felon.
Trevino was sentenced to 100 months in jail, followed by three years on supervised release.
Prosecutors say Trevino sold methamphetamine to another person. On a separate occasion, he was riding in the front passenger seat of a police-stopped car.
Officers discovered a backpack on the floorboard containing methamphetamine, plastic baggies often used for drug packaging, Trevino’s ID, and a loaded revolver.
Prosecutors said Trevino has a past felony record for residential access, making it illegal for him to possess a firearm.
According to U.S. Attorney Adam Mildred, many organizations collaborated on the case, including the Drug Enforcement Administration, LaPorte County officials, and local police departments. Because of their work, a repeat felon who intended to poison our neighborhood with methamphetamine while armed with a revolver will serve eight years in prison followed by three years of community supervision,” Mildred said in a statement.
DEA Assistant Special Agent in Charge Chip Cooke stated that law enforcement will continue to target drug trafficking and violent crime in northern Indiana. Northern Indiana has no space for drug traffickers’ cruelty and evilness. Mr. Trevino will be out of society for an extended period of time, and as a result, northern Indiana will be safer and healthier,” Cooke stated.
