Pennsylvania Man Charged For 17-year-old Kayaker’s Drowning Near Presque Isle

A 22-year-old Pittsburgh man is charged with homicide, corruption of minors, and other offenses in connection with a drowning death last July.

According to the complaint, Derek Bold of Irwin, PA, is facing multiple counts for allegedly buying alcohol for 17-year-old Madison Gallagher and then stealing a one-person kayak from Sara’s Campground beach on Peninsula Drive.

According to the document, the two launched the kayak without paddles or personal flotation devices, and it capsized, killing Gallagher.

Bold was rescued by a nearby neighbor, but Gallagher’s body was discovered two days later on Presque Isle Beach 1.

The Erie County coroner’s findings revealed that both Gallagher and Bold were under the influence of alcohol at the time, with Bold additionally under the effect of THC.
