2 men sentenced to decades in prison after murder-for-hire shooting in Prince William County

Two men could face decades in prison after being convicted of the shooting death of a woman in Prince William County, which police suspect was arranged by her husband.

Grorethas McKinnon, Jr., 29, was found guilty on March 26 of Egypt Carter’s murder in 2024, according to a news release. Drew Buchanan, 29, pled guilty to his involvement in the crime in March 2025.

McKinnon faces up to 40 years in jail and is scheduled to be sentenced on July 2. Buchanan faces up to life in prison and is scheduled to be sentenced on June 12.

McKinnon and Buchanan were indicted in December 2024, along with two other men: Lionel Melvin Carter III and Denzel Wade.

Investigators suspect Lionel Carter ordered the hit on his wife from within Sussex State Prison, where he was already serving a sentence for killing his ex-girlfriend.

According to authorities, Lionel Carter contacted McKinnon in prison and devised a plan to kill Egypt Carter.

According to investigators, the victim was enticed to the area of Bronson Court and Brickwood Drive in Woodbridge for a drug deal. When she arrived, authorities alleged she was ambushed and killed by Buchanan and Wade.

The men planned the attack via social media and text messages, according to records. Prosecutors said that digital evidence contributed to McKinnon’s conviction.

The Commonwealth Attorney’s Office provided no update on Wade and Lionel Carter’s prosecution.
