Two people were arrested Tuesday night during a demonstration outside Doctors Medical Center in Modesto for allegedly vandalizing a highway, according to police. The protest was in response to ICE’s shooting of a Patterson man on Tuesday morning, who was brought to DMC for treatment.
According to the Modesto Police Department, officers were watching the relatively calm demonstration on Florida Avenue in front of the hospital.
Shortly before 10 p.m., two people wrote “ICE out” on the road with white paint, according to police. Both were detained on accusations of felony vandalism.
The suspects were identified as Bernadette Gamez, 36, of Modesto, and Wendy Villagran, 22, of Stockton.
The demonstration occurred hours after Carlos Ivan Mendoza Hernandez was shot after a meeting with US Immigration and Customs Enforcement authorities in Patterson earlier Tuesday.
Modesto Public Works crews have been alerted and are attempting to remove the vandalism, according to police.
Despite social media requests for supporters to gather outside the Stanislaus County Public Safety Center, the jail saw no activists on Wednesday morning.
