Suburban Chicago man sentenced to prison in attempted carjacking of off-duty Cook County deputy

A suburban Chicago man will serve almost six years in jail after prosecutors say he attempted to carjack an off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s deputy while the officer’s family was in the vehicle.

Javon Stingley, 28, of southwest suburban Midlothian, was sentenced last week to five years and ten months in federal prison for attempting to carjack.

According to authorities, the incident happened on February 19, 2023, at a gas station in south suburban Dolton. An off-duty Cook County Sheriff’s officer was standing outside his Dodge Challenger when Stingley and two other people approached with loaded weapons and demanded the car.

According to prosecutors, one of the males threatened the deputy with comments like “I’ll shoot you, don’t move,” and took the officer’s service weapon from his waistband.

The deputy’s wife and children were inside the Challenger but exited before the suspects entered. The three men eventually left without stealing the vehicle and drove away in their own automobile.

Stingley was arrested in October 2024 and pleaded guilty to attempted carjacking. He was condemned on April 9.

The other two persons charged in the case are at various stages of legal proceedings.

Michael Banks, 23, of Chicago, admitted his role as part of a larger plea arrangement involving other carjackings and firearms violations. He is set to be sentenced on June 24.

Joseph Smith, 34, from Hammond, Indiana, has pled not guilty and is awaiting trial.
