Baltimore man sentenced to 11 years in federal prison for robberies, carjacking and assault

A Baltimore man was sentenced to 11 years in federal prison for armed robberies, a carjacking, and assaulting a federal officer, the Maryland U.S. Attorney’s Office stated on Thursday.

Sharif Northington, 23, was sentenced to ten years in jail for interfering with commerce through robbery, as well as using, carrying, and brandishing a firearm during and in connection with a violent crime.

Northington was also sentenced to a subsequent year in prison for willfully attacking a deputy U.S. marshal at a U.S. courthouse in Baltimore.

In September 2024, Northington intimidated and then assaulted a US Marshal who was transporting him to his cell after a court appearance.

Northington planned with 27-year-old Devin Grimes and 21-year-old John Hyman, both of Baltimore, in November 2022 to commit armed commercial robberies and at least one carjacking.

During each robbery and carjacking, the men used a weapon to demand money, a vehicle, and/or other valuables.

On November 29, Northington, Grimes, and Hyman entered a northeast Baltimore 7-Eleven wearing masks and hoods.

Grimes pulled out a weapon and then robbed the store with Northington and Hyman.

The males allegedly grabbed cash from the register and then fled.

What they didn’t realize was that the stolen cash featured a money tracker, which allowed law enforcement to trace their travels.

As a response, Baltimore Police (BPD) and Baltimore County Police (BCPD) sent officers, detectives, and aviation teams to track down the suspects.

The three men then visited a carry-out eatery less than a mile away.

Grimes proceeded to the back of the restaurant and pulled out a revolver, then confronted a delivery man and stole the keys from his pocket.

Grimes then grabbed money from the cash register, and the three men fled the store in the delivery man’s vehicle.

BPD and BCPD aviation teams soon located the three individuals.

Grimes was arrested, and officers found a loaded Smith & Wesson. 40 caliber weapon, money, and a money tracker.

Law enforcement discovered extra cash in the vehicle.

In December 2024, Grimes was sentenced to ten years in federal prison. Then, in September 2025, Hyman was sentenced to ten years in prison for his involvement in the crimes.

Northington now faces 10 years in prison.
