Chicago officers and federal agents say a coordinated series of South Side raids turned up nine guns, suspected narcotics, piles of stolen merchandise, and over $280,000 in cash during a one-day sweep earlier this month. According to police, the operation commenced on April 12 and became public on April 20.
The Chicago Police Department says members of its retail-theft task force collaborated with various district tactical units and a list of federal and suburban partners on the operation. The ATF’s Chicago Field Division, the FBI’s Chicago Division, and suburban Vernon Hills and Glencoe police departments were all involved. The report focused on the headline numbers: nine recovered firearms, stolen items, and more than $280,000 in cash, with multiple semi-automatic handguns among the seized weapons. Gang investigators got warrants for three locations, and two males, Antwaun Bohannon and Malcolm Richardson, were arrested in connection with the discovered guns, according to the Chicago Police Department. Bohannon is charged with one felony offense of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, while Richardson is charged with two felony charges of firearm possession by a repeat felony offender.
According to the agency, the collection included multiple semi-automatic weapons, suspected narcotics, various allegedly stolen consumer goods, and more than $280,000 in cash. Federal prosecutors and ATF officials have lately stated that they are relying on cooperative operations in Chicago to disrupt gun trafficking and organized retail crime, as outlined by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Illinois.
On April 12, investigators conducting gang investigations obtained and executed search warrants for properties in Chatham, Englewood, and Fernwood. Detectives say they are now categorizing the confiscated materials and collaborating with federal partners to track the firearms and commodities to determine whether additional charges will be filed.
Bohannon faces one count of unlawful use of a weapon by a felon, while Richardson faces two counts of possessing a firearm by a repeat criminal offender. Both actions are considered felonies under Illinois law. Investigators say the arrests and recovered evidence will be given over to prosecutors once the review is completed, and federal referrals are still possible based on the findings.
