Three teenage boys, including one from Maryland, were detained in connection with a botched armed robbery last month that resulted in the shooting of a man in Northeast D.C., according to the Metropolitan Police Department.
On Tuesday, July 29, at approximately 8:30 p.m., a man was shot on the 3700 block of Hayes Street, Northeast. The victim, who survived with non-life-threatening injuries, informed police that he was approached by two individuals, one of whom brandished a gun and demanded his property. Before he could answer, the suspect fired a shot that struck the man. The two left on foot without taking anything.
After several weeks of investigation, authorities identified three suspects in the crime. On Wednesday, August 27, officers patrolling nearby noticed the trio in the 3500 block of Jay Street, Northeast, and moved in to arrest them.
The suspects, a 13- and 15-year-old from Northeast D.C. and a 14-year-old from Suitland, Maryland, were arrested and charged with assault with intent to rob while armed. Police confirmed that they made the arrests based on custody orders from DC Superior Court.
Due to their age, details about the suspects’ identity remain unknown, and no word has been published on whether they will face adult charges.
The Sixth District has responded to several occurrences in the Hayes Street corridor recently, but it is unknown whether this gunshot is related to any other ongoing investigations.
