80-year-old man accused in shooting at Geauga County dog park after ‘political’ argument

An 80-year-old man from Chagrin Falls is accused of shooting another man at a dog park in Bainbridge Township earlier this month.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on April 21 in the 8500 block of Crackle Road.

Authorities have charged 80-year-old Emmanuel John Mathews with felonious assault.

Mathews entered a not guilty plea during his arraignment at Chardon Municipal Court on April 22 and posted bond.

Bainbridge Township police officers said the victim, a 55-year-old man from Auburn Township, suffered a gunshot wound to the hip; however, family members told 19 News he was actually shot twice in the back and underwent multiple “life-saving surgeries.”

Police said Mathews drove away from the dog park after the shooting, but officers took him into custody several blocks from the scene.

Mathews’ attorney told 19 News that the men were involved in a “political argument” before the shooting and claimed his client acted in self-defense.

Mathews is scheduled to return to court on May 4.
