Deadly shooting on Columbus’ South Side claims one life, suspect arrested

One man has died, and the suspect accused of killing him is now in custody following a shooting on April 29 on Columbus’ South Side.

Police responded shortly after 4 p.m. to reports of a shooting in the 1500 block of Burstock Road near Fairwood Park.

When officers arrived, they found 53-year-old Bernie L. Craig suffering from gunshot wounds. Medics with the Columbus Division of Fire transported him to OhioHealth Grant Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 4:35 p.m.

At the scene, officers detained both a witness and a suspect. Detectives with the Homicide Unit have charged 24-year-old Dante’ J. Venison with murder in connection with Craig’s death.

Police shared no additional details in a news release issued late April 29.
