Meigs County Bicentennial schedule set for the weekend
POMEROY, Ohio – Meigs County will be celebrating this coming weekend with a celebration that includes Civil War reenactors, a parade and the Governor of Ohio.
“We really hope that all who are proud of their home will either come out and participate or come out and support this celebration. It’s truly a once in a lifetime event and as Meigs Countians, we have every reason to celebrate our past, our present, and our future,” said Randy Smith, Meigs County Commissioner and one of the Bicentennial Committee members. Sammi Sisson Mugrage and James Stanley are also on the main committee.

The celebration begins from with a Student Education Day at the Meigs County Fairgrounds which will include Civil War reenactors and will go from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
At 6:30 p.m., the Chester-Shade Historical Society will hold their annual benefit dinner at Meigs High School.

The full day of activities kicks off with a parade at 10 a.m. The parade is set to begin in Pomeroy and is scheduled to end in Middleport. Governor Mike DeWine will be the Grand Marshal for the parade. Anyone interested in participating in the parade but did not get registered you may still participate. You can show up for the line up at 9 a.m. Those wishing to compete in the contest and did not get registered in time need to contact a committee member on Facebook as soon as possible.
Following the parade at noon there will be a time capsule unveiling at the Civil War Memorial next to the Meigs County Courthouse.
At 1 p.m. there will be a war skirmish. The skirmish will begin in Mason, West Virginia, cross the Ohio River and advance to Court Street to take the Courthouse. While John Hunt Morgan and his raiders did not invade or raid Pomeroy directly, this skirmish is a loose representation of the Battle of Buffington Island and will include Sternwheel vessels on the river. Those of Morgan’s men that were captured were taken to the Meigs County Courthouse following capture and held there for a time.
The celebration continues on the music stage at the west end of the parking lot. At 2 p.m., Nick Michael and the Susan Page Orchestra followed at 3:30 p.m. by the Renee Stewart Band. Next Level will perform at 5 p.m. followed by Metheney at 7 p.m.
At 6 p.m. there will be a Civil War Ball at Wolfe Mountain Entertainment.

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. there will be vendors and kids activities at the Meigs County Fairgrounds. At noon there will be a demonstration by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. Also at the fairgrounds, there will be a Civil War battle at 1 p.m.
