State troopers find 20 undocumented migrants, including four minors, hidden inside the sleeping compartment of a commercial truck tractor during a traffic stop in South Texas last week, authorities said.
The driver, Miguel Angel Velazquez Chavez, 25, faces various counts in connection with the incident on Interstate 35 in Webb County, according to the Texas Department of Public Safety.
A DPS officer conducted a traffic check on a white Volvo truck tractor around mile marker 28 shortly after 6 p.m. on Monday, May 18. Velazquez Chavez allegedly left the vehicle on foot after it came to a stop but was quickly arrested by law authorities.
A further examination of the truck tractor’s cab uncovered 20 persons hiding in the vehicle’s sleeping accommodations. Investigators identified the migrants as coming from Mexico and Guatemala.
Velazquez Chavez, a Mexican national, was detained and put into Webb County Jail. He has been accused of smuggling and fleeing arrest.
The twenty migrants were turned up to the United States Border Patrol.
