A 14-year-old girl was fatally shot Saturday evening in Southeast Washington, triggering a massive police reaction in the Washington Highlands neighborhood and another round of heartbreaking concerns about children, weapons, and safety on city streets.
Police say they were summoned about 6:54 p.m. to the 900 block of Barnaby Street SE for a suspected shooting. A significant number of officers gathered at the scene, and a public information officer was dispatched to brief reporters. Investigators encouraged anyone with information to call 202-727-9099 or text an anonymous tip to 50411.
According to WJLA, the Metropolitan Police Department announced on social media that officers were investigating a shooting in the 900 block of Barnaby Street SE. The notice acknowledged an ongoing investigation but did not include information on victims, suspects, or a suspected motive. A press conference is expected soon, while police remain on the site to examine evidence and interview any witnesses.
The incident occurred in Washington Highlands, an area that was already on edge due to gun crime. A tragic 2 a.m. shooting in the region in April raised persistent safety concerns among homeowners, who are tired of seeing crime scene tape on their blocks. As detectives try to piece together what happened on Barnaby Street, the need for surveillance footage and eyewitness statements becomes increasingly crucial.
WJLA reported that the victim was a 14-year-old girl. According to the station’s sources, other children were exploring the area when they discovered a weapon and struck the girl in the head. Police have not corroborated these accounts and say the inquiry is underway.
As detectives attempt to determine how a gun came up in the hands of children, officials urged anybody who witnessed or heard anything, or who may have pertinent doorbell or dashcam footage, to call investigators at 202-727-9099 or text anonymous information to 50411.
