A Miami man was taken into custody after deputies said he used a fake DeSoto County government email to scam a resident of nearly $4,000.
According to the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office, the victim was already pursuing permit permission from the DeSoto County Planning and Building Department when they got an email claiming to be from the “DeSoto County Board of Adjustment.” The victim paid $3,950 for what they thought were permission costs, according to the sheriff’s office.
Investigators stated the money was deposited into a bank account called “DESOTO COUNTY-BOARD OF ADJUSTMENT,” but the account holder was recognized as Jose Alfonso Dejesus of Miami.
Detective Jason Baun was assigned to the case in April and identified Dejesus as the suspect, according to the sheriff’s office. Deputies stated that Dejesus does not work for DeSoto County.
An arrest warrant was issued, charging DeJesus with a plan to swindle for less than $20,000. He was recently found and arrested in Winter Garden.
