Chicago man taken into custody nearly 2 years after robbery and attack at Sox-35th Red Line station

A Chicago man has been taken into custody almost two years after an elderly man was robbed and attacked on the CTA Red Line platform near Guaranteed Rate Field.

Curtis Tyler, 34, was apprehended Sunday by members of the Chicago Police Department’s Robbery Task Force on the 2600 block of South California Avenue in the Little Village neighborhood.

Tyler has been identified by police as the person who robbed and hit a 71-year-old man on the Sox-35th Red Line station in the 400 block of West 35th Street on August 28, 2024.

Tyler, according to CPD, used force to take the victim’s personal items. He’s charged with:

  • One felony count of robbery.
  • One felony count of aggravated battery involving a transit employee/passenger.

It is still unclear how Tyler was identified as the suspect and why it took years to apprehend him.

Tyler has been arrested many times since 2014 on accusations of criminal trespass, simple assault, criminal property damage, battery involving physical contact, aggravated violence causing grave bodily harm, and aggravated battery involving the use of a deadly weapon, according to CPD records.

Tyler will appear in court for a detention hearing on Tuesday.
