Chicago man sentenced to prison for stabbing woman 11 times in Naperville

A Chicago man will serve two decades in state prison after confessing in 2022 that he attempted to kill a woman he was dating by stabbing her 11 times inside a west suburban hotel room.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin announced Monday that Willie Tidwell, 53, was sentenced to 20 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections.

According to authorities, the attack occurred around 9:17 p.m. on September 10, 2022, at the Extended Stay hotel located at 1827 Centre Point Circle in Naperville.

According to authorities, Tidwell went to the woman’s hotel room and argued with her after accusing her of ignoring his phone calls and blocking his number.

Prosecutors claimed the disagreement got physical. Tidwell repeatedly struck the victim before pulling out a knife and slashing her 11 times in the stomach, neck, and chest.

Tidwell fled the hotel following the attack, while the woman contacted 911. Tidwell was apprehended on September 30, 2022, at a Calumet City residence without incident.

At his first court appearance, a judge granted him pretrial release, and he has since been held in the DuPage County Jail.

Tidwell pleaded guilty to one count of attempted murder on December 10, 2025. The terrible attack on an innocent woman in a hotel room, where she was beaten and stabbed numerous times, highlights the prevalence of domestic violence in society, according to a statement from Berlin. The survivor of this horrific attack will bear physical and emotional scars for the rest of her life, and I wish her strength as she deals with the aftermath of what Mr Tidwell has done to her.”

Tidwell must complete at least 85% of his 20-year prison sentence before being eligible for parole.
