Authorities say a Brownsville apartment complex became the scene of a heated argument Thursday afternoon when a Cincinnati man allegedly used his vehicle to hit another man, seriously injuring the victim and putting the driver in jail on a first-degree assault charge.
According to deputies, the clash occurred at the Green River Apartments on South Main Street at 4:30 p.m., when officers responded to complaints of a brawl in the parking lot. According to witnesses, the victim went into the lot carrying a chain before being struck by a vehicle driven by 44-year-old Jonathan Shelton, which resulted in a separate violent confrontation, according to the sheriff’s office. According to Edmonson Voice, Shelton first left the scene but subsequently returned to the complex.
Edmonson County EMS carried the injured guy from the apartment complex to a local hospital, where he was treated for significant injuries, according to officials. Authorities have not revealed any other information on his condition.
Following the fight in the apartments, deputies issued a description of the car involved. A short time later, they stopped a car in the Chalybeate hamlet that matched eyewitness descriptions and identified Shelton as the driver, according to the Edmonson County Sheriff’s Office.
Shelton was arrested and charged with assault in the first degree. He was incarcerated at the Hart County Jail. Investigators have not stated if they expect any additional charges in relation with the event.
Assault in the first degree is defined under Kentucky law as when a person knowingly causes serious physical injury with a lethal weapon or acts in a way that puts a person in great danger of death and serious injury. The statute, which is categorized as a Class B felony, is described in Justia. According to FindLaw, Class B felonies in Kentucky normally carry sentences ranging from 10 to 20 years in jail. Any real punishment would be based on prosecution judgments, any aggravating factors, and the defendant’s prior record.
The Edmonson County Sheriff’s Office said the investigation is ongoing and encourages anyone with additional information on the Brownsville incident to contact the department. The agency’s public contact information website includes 270-597-2157 for general queries. Officials had not made any further public statements at the time of the initial story.
