A young boy who went missing three years ago has been located safe, putting an end to a mystery that had left family, friends, and supporters looking for answers.
Andrew Escobar was found in El Paso, Texas, many years after authorities said his mother, Miriam Felix, fled with her then-11-year-old son in July 2023.
Since Andrew’s abduction, his father, Juan Escobar, and officials have been determined to find him.
Juan told KAOT7 that he and Andrew’s stepmother, Monique Escobar, were so determined to find him that they resigned their jobs to pursue it full-time.
Juan was in “shock and disbelief” when he received a call from an El Paso police officer on Wednesday reporting that Miriam had raised an alert while attempting to cross the border from Mexico into the US. His mother triggered some sort of warning, and then they examined his ID, which revealed that he was listed as a missing person, and that’s when they detained them both,” Juan added.
Andrew was last seen in Rio Rancho, New Mexico, prior to his discovery.
Miriam was facing many criminal warrants, according to Albuquerque police, for breaking her custody agreement.
Despite not knowing where his son was for years, Juan continued to celebrate significant events such as his birthday. “We were best friends,” he explained to KRQE in January. “We would constantly do things together. We enjoyed making movies of what we were doing together and joking around. He was constantly kidding around.”
While Juan is relieved to have Andrew back, he said that his son’s mother traveled to several countries while on the run, including Albania and Turkey. Even though his kid appeared to be in good physical health, Juan expressed concern about Andrew’s mental health given everything he’s been through.
“Physically, he’s well, but he’s just been through so much the last three years emotionally and mentally,” Juan replied.
Miriam is currently awaiting extradition back to Mexico, according to Darlene Gomez, who has represented the family during the search attempts. According to Gomez, there are many unknowns right now as the reunited family learns to know each other again after so many years apart.
