A Lafayette, Louisiana man wanted in Texas on narcotics and theft charges was taken into custody on Friday, July 3, 2026, in Natchitoches.
Deputies from the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff’s Office (NPSO) performed a traffic stop on Martin Luther King Drive around 3:30 p.m. after discovering a stolen car reported by the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office.
NPSO deputies confirmed that Rufus Evans, 41, was driving the stolen pickup vehicle. According to Sheriff Stuart Wright, when deputies searched the vehicle, they discovered illegal substances and an AR-15-style semi-automatic gun.
Deputies apprehended Evans and discovered during the investigation that he was wanted by the Winkler County Sheriff’s Office in Kermit, Texas, for possession of dangerous drugs in connection with an incident in October 2025.
Evans was placed into the Natchitoches Parish Detention Center on a variety of offenses, including illegal possession of stolen property and possession of marijuana and methamphetamines.
Evans is anticipated to be extradited to Texas. Additional charges are also pending with the Washington Parish Sheriff’s Office. “This arrest exemplifies the outstanding cooperation that exists among law enforcement agencies across our state and nation,” stated Sheriff Stuart Wright. “Every arrest like this makes our communities safer, and I commend our deputies for their professionalism, dedication, and commitment to protecting the citizens of Natchitoches Parish.”
