A Mason City man was sentenced to nine years in federal prison for illegally possessing ammunition.
Luke Braniff, 26, admitted to possessing ammunition while being prohibited from owning firearms or ammunition owing to prior felony convictions. Braniff had previously been convicted of two counts of lascivious activities with a child in 2017 and sex offender registry violations in 2018, 2023, and 2025.
Police claim they uncovered Braniff’s illegal possession of ammunition while investigating charges that he sent crude sexual messages to a minor on Snapchat and wanted nude photographs of the child.
U.S. District Court Judge Leonard T. Strand sentenced Braniff to 108 months in prison and three years of supervised release after his incarceration. There is no parole in the federal system.
Braniff is being held by the US Marshals Service until he is transferred to a federal prison. The Mason City Police Department investigated the incident.
