A Waldorf man was charged after police said he stole an $8,000 diamond necklace from a jewelry store at St. Charles Towne Center and was hit by a car while running through the mall parking lot.
Kevin Williams Jr., 34, of Waldorf, has been charged with stealing from $1,500 to less than $25,000.
The incident occurred around 11:27 a.m. on June 29, 2026, at Georgetown Jewelers, which is located inside the mall at 11110 Mall Circle.
According to the charging documents, Williams entered the store and asked to see a 14-karat gold necklace with diamonds. After a staffer handed him the necklace, he allegedly fled the store without paying.
The jewelry was valued at around $8,000.
As Williams rushed through the parking lot, he was hit by a vehicle that did not stop, according to investigators. Despite his injuries, he continued to run and left the area.
While officers were investigating the theft, emergency services received a call about an injured individual in the 3800 block of Northgate Place. Callers stated that the man had been hit by a vehicle.
Responding officers identified Williams as the theft suspect and noticed that he was dressed in the same attire as seen in the store’s security film.
Williams was taken to the hospital, where he was treated and released for his injuries from the crash.
According to the charging documents, Williams admitted to removing the necklace after being advised of his rights. He reportedly informed investigators that he had misplaced it near a park-and-ride but did not specify a location.
An arrest warrant was issued on June 29 and served on June 30. Williams was originally held without bond.
Williams was released on recognizance with electronic monitoring after a bond hearing before Judge Andrea R.S. Watkins in Charles County District Court on July 1.
A hearing is scheduled for August 14, 2026, in Charles County District Court.
