A woman from Doña Ana County has been taken into custody in El Paso, Texas for committing medical fraud by impersonating nurses in El Paso and Las Cruces.
Margarita Gonzalez has been arrested on over a dozen offenses in Texas alone. El Paso investigators discovered more than half a million dollars in Medicaid overpayments related to her unlicensed nursing activity dating back to 2024.
In May, a Doña Ana County grand jury indicted her following an investigation by the New Mexico Department of Justice’s Medicaid Fraud Bureau. Prosecutors claim Gonzalez used the names of Texas nurses to acquire jobs at four Las Cruces nursing homes and illegally provided patient care. According to the study, in one instance, she nearly provided an incorrect insulin dose, which may have resulted in a serious incident or the death of a patient.
Gonzalez faces 34 counts of misbehavior, including identity theft, nursing without a license, abuse of a resident, distribution of controlled medications to a juvenile, and fraud totaling more than $25,000.
According to court documents in New Mexico, Gonzalez’s jury trial is scheduled for August 23. The lady was previously arrested in May in El Paso County on more than a dozen accusations of breaking nursing laws.
