Apple AirTag helps police arrest serial Dinkytown bike thief

An Apple AirTag helped police arrest a serial thief accused of stealing multiple bicycles and a scooter from the same Dinkytown apartment complex.

Alec Robert Lindman, 40, of New Brighton, has been charged with multiple counts of criminal burglary and theft for the spree that occurred in June.

Lindman was caught on a security camera entering the bike lounge and fiddling with locks in each of the crimes, according to a criminal charge.

Prosecutors in Hennepin County say Lindman took the following things from the Standard apartment complex in Dinkytown:

  • June 9: Theft of black Werhy brand H9 model scooter valued at $400
  • June 12: Theft of light blue mountain bicycle valued at $1,800
  • June 12: Theft of bicycle was valued at $1200
  • June 12: Theft of dark blue Fuiji brand bicycle valued at $800
  • June 16: Theft of gray Giant brand bicycle valued at $500

In one of the robberies, the victim had rigged their bike with an Apple Airtag, which connected to another Minneapolis apartment building on Brooks Avenue Southeast. A search warrant for the location yielded the stolen bicycle, but the front tire and seat had been removed.

Lindman has been convicted of prior thefts, according to court records, including stealing products from a Target shop and taking a vehicle used as bait by Minneapolis police.

Lindman was detained on June 13 in Minneapolis. He is being held in the Hennepin County Jail, where he remained as of Monday afternoon.
