Florida Woman Sentenced To 3 Years In Prison For Fraudulent Camp Mystic Donation Scheme

A Florida woman was sentenced to three years in a Texas prison after pleading guilty to an online fundraising scheme that took advantage of families devastated by the fatal Camp Mystic floods in 2025.

According to Harris County Constable Precinct 1, 29-year-old Maitlin White posed as a relative of Camp Mystic victims to raise donations via GoFundMe and other online fundraising platforms.

The fake effort revolved around the aftermath of the July 2025 flash floods that destroyed Camp Mystic, an all-girls summer camp on the Guadalupe River in Hunt, Texas.

The floods killed 27 kids and staff, including 25 females, two teen counselors, and Dick Eastland, the camp’s longstanding director and co-owner, who died while attempting to rescue campers.

According to investigators, White purposefully used the tragedy by impersonating Chloe Childress’s family to collect fake donations.

“It is inexcusable how she sought to prey on our community’s emotions and abused the family of Chloe Childress, who have endured an unimaginable tragedy,” Harris County Constable Precinct 1 Alan Rosen said in a statement. “Let this case be a warning to anyone else who ever seeks to engage in such schemes in the future.”

White was charged with two third-degree felonies after an investigation by investigators from the Harris County Constable Precinct 1 Office.

According to authorities, the Gulf Coast Violent Offenders Task Force discovered and apprehended her in Florida before returning her to Texas for prosecution.

She pleaded guilty and received a three-year sentence from the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.
