A 30-year-old Alliance woman was killed this morning in a horrific two-vehicle crash at the intersection of U.S. 62 and Harmont Avenue NE in Canton. One car flipped, and both vehicles wound up in the southeast corner of the intersection.
Canton police and emergency crews rushed to the site, discovering substantial damage to both vehicles. One vehicle had overturned, and authorities worked to secure the scene while treating the injured drivers.
According to Cleveland 19 News, a 2016 Chevrolet Silverado was heading east on U.S. 62 when it collided with a 2023 Mitsubishi Mirage turning south onto Harmont Avenue. Police identified the Mitsubishi driver as Erin R. Stevens, 30, of Alliance. She was evacuated from the vehicle due to substantial damage and later confirmed dead at Aultman Hospital.
According to the same report, the driver of the Silverado was taken to Aultman and treated before being released.
The crash occurred at an intersection that had previously been on local officials’ radar. Stark County’s 2024 safety study notes that the U.S. 62 and Harmont Avenue area has been a safety priority, with more than 140 crashes documented between 2018 and 2022.
The research suggests changes like high-visibility crosswalks and altered signal timing. It also identifies roadway geometry, multiple access points, and driver decision-making as factors that may increase crash risk along that stretch of road.
Canton police told Cleveland 19 News that the Canton Metro Crash Team responded to the scene and is conducting the investigation. Officers said they don’t believe speed was a factor in the collision.
Investigators have yet to determine whether drugs or alcohol were involved. As part of its investigation, the Metro Crash Team is expected to analyze physical evidence from the intersection, assess car damage, and reconstruct the occurrence.
Police have not released many additional details while the investigation is ongoing. Authorities say they will release more information as it becomes available.
