Authorities in Georgia have apprehended 19-year-old Amari Haugabook in connection with a July 6 shooting in Atlanta that claimed the life of 19-year-old Dre’Ana Shellman.
According to a statement provided by the Atlanta Police Department, police responded to the incident on July 6, which injured Shellman. She was taken to a local hospital and pronounced dead.
On Thursday, July 23, law officers took Haugabook into custody.
Investigators discovered that Haugabook was the boyfriend of Shellman’s acquaintance. According to local news reports, Shellman was riding in a vehicle with Haugabook’s girlfriend when he allegedly opened fire on the car.
According to police documents and arrest warrants obtained by 11Alive, Haugabook was involved in a domestic disturbance with his girlfriend the month before. In the June incident, Haugabook allegedly bear-sprayed his girlfriend, spat on her, and seized her phone to prevent her from calling 911.
Following that, he was charged with armed robbery, aggravated violence, simple battery, and obstructing an emergency call.
Shellman’s family revealed details about her life after the tragedy, characterizing her as a behavioral therapist who dealt with children with autism. Family members praised her artistic hobbies, such as cosmetic artistry, hairstyling, and eyelash extensions, and emphasized her role as an elder sister to her younger brother.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing.
