A wanted Cleveland man, 25, was detained outside the Red Roof Inn, 17555 Bagley Road, around 10:30 a.m. on August 6.
Police had been keeping an eye on Motel 6, 7219 Engle Road, and spotted the man walking from Red Roof to Motel 6. He was texting from his phone.
The man then began going back toward the Red Roof. He noticed officers and kept looking at them.
The man sat in an outdoor smoking area, lighting a cigaret.
Police thought that a drug deal was taking place. They drove toward the man, but by the time they reached the Red Roof smoking area, he was already walking to the hotel entrance.
Police stopped the man and asked him what he was smoking. He said he was smoking tobacco and led officers back to the smoking area to demonstrate.
Police noticed the man’s lit cigaret on the ground. They didn’t smell marijuana.
The individual stated that he was staying at Red Roof. Police asked him why he had walked to Motel 6. He claimed he was visiting a friend there.
The police asked for permission to search the man. He stated that he was carrying marijuana and removed a handful of loose marijuana from his jeans pocket.
The individual originally misidentified himself to authorities, but later revealed his own name.
He was wanted on two warrants, at least one of which was issued in Lakewood.
The man permitted cops to look through his phone to discover who he had been texting earlier.
The man had agreed to meet “Big Bro,” also known as “Bud” and “Freak,” at Motel 6 via text messaging.
The man claimed he wasn’t sure where Big Bro was sleeping at Motel 6.
Police retrieved Big Bro’s phone number and identified him as a 29-year-old man serving federal probation for narcotics and firearms offenses.
His last known address was in Charleston, Missouri.
A security camera at Motel 6 saw the 25-year-old Cleveland man walking to a specific room. He stood at the door for a few seconds, then completed a transaction and left.
