A 49-year-old Tampa woman died Tuesday evening after an impaired driver lost control of his car, went airborne, and struck her as she waited at a local bus stop, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.
The collision occurred around 7:40 p.m. on September 22 on 56th Street North near Pitch Pine Circle in Hillsborough County.
State troopers said 33-year-old Benny Bruce Wallace of Tampa was driving south on 56th Street in a Chevy sedan when he lost control of the car. The car veered off the road and into a shoulder culvert, propelling it into the air.
While airborne, the Chevy collided with a 49-year-old woman standing at a bus stop on the northwest corner of the junction. The automobile continued to move until it collided with a Toyota sedan waiting at the intersection on Pitch Pine Circle. The driver of the Toyota, a 42-year-old Tampa male, was not reported to have suffered serious injuries.
First responders rushed the woman to a neighboring hospital with significant injuries, where she was pronounced dead. Her name has not yet been released.
Wallace was driving inebriated, according to investigators on the scene. Troopers arrested Wallace and charged him with DUI manslaughter.
