Two groups of people shot at each other during a birthday party at a Georgia city park, resulting in gunshot wounds to 12 teens, a sheriff said Sunday.
Bibb County Sheriff David Davis said during a press conference that the shooting took place early Sunday morning, sometime after midnight, in Carolyn Crayton Park in Macon.
A group of young people traveled to the park to celebrate a woman’s 18th birthday after being ejected out of a party home rented several hours earlier, according to Davis. in some point, another party arrived in the park, resulting in a conflict.
“Both groups exchanged words, brandished firearms and then began firing at each other,” Davis claimed.
Investigators were still trying to figure out how the two groups were tied and what triggered hostilities. Surveillance video from the park showed an outburst of gunfire lasting approximately 30 seconds as people left the area.
Deputies rushed to the park and discovered that the victims had been driven to a local hospital in personal vehicles. One 19-year-old man, four 18-year-old men, five 17-year-old males, and two 18-year-old females were all treated for their injuries. Two of the people were in critical condition, while the rest were stable.
“There’s no indication that any of these individuals who were injured at this time participated in the gunfire,” Davis stated.
Although no arrests were made right away, the sheriff stated that investigators were looking at many individuals. Deputies seized four automobiles that transported victims to the hospital and three that were abandoned at the park. They also interrogated ten witnesses.
“There’s going to be some heavy police presences in some places coming up over the next few days as we make some arrests in this,” Davis stated.
On Sunday morning, police in Detroit responded to an after-hours strip club where an altercation resulted in gunshots, killing three people and injuring four. No arrests were immediately announced.
