A Hialeah man was detained after his girlfriend discovered a video purportedly showing him secretly recording her 13-year-old daughter in their home’s bathroom, police said.
The suspect, Yelier Alderete, 40, has been living with his girlfriend and her daughter since March, according to a Hialeah Police arrest report.
According to investigators, the girl’s mother became suspicious about Alderete because he preferred sleeping on the living room couch rather than sharing a bedroom with her.
On September 23, the woman apparently saw Alderete sleeping on the couch, his cellphone lying on his chest.
According to the police complaint, she took his phone into the bedroom and transferred around 400 photos and videos to her own device before giving it back to him.
While checking the files, she came across a video of her teenage daughter in the restroom.
According to police, the tape showed Alderete placing his cellphone inside the restroom before leaving.
Moments later, the girl entered and used the restroom, not realizing she was being recorded.
Investigators said the four-minute video also showed Alderete returning to get his cellphone.
On Tuesday, October 6, the mother went to the Hialeah Police Department to report the incident and gave officers a copy of the recording.
Because of the victim’s age, detectives from the department’s Special Victims Unit were called in to investigate.
The next day, officers tracked down Alderete at 3898 NW Seventh St. in Miami and arrested him.
According to police, Alderete was taken to the Hialeah Police Department for interrogation but exercised his right to stay silent.
According to the mother’s account and the video evidence, Alderete was detained on a video voyeurism accusation involving a kid.
He was sent to Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center for booking.
A judge determined probable cause and issued a $15,000 bond.
