Man sentenced to 4 years in prison for violent downtown robberies that left some victims unconscious

An Indiana man accused of participating in a series of violent robberies downtown and along the Mag Mile, some of which left victims unconscious, has been sentenced to four years. However, state law will reduce his prison time by half.

The incident began about 2:30 a.m. on July 6, 2025, when Michael Seawood, 25, of East Chicago, and at least one accomplice allegedly attacked a 52-year-old Loop resident in the 400 block of North Lower Michigan Avenue. The man collapsed to the ground and lay immobile, suffering a shattered jaw that needed surgery to place plates, authorities said.

A 28-year-old guy from Las Vegas attempted to interfere during the attack, according to prosecutors. Seawood allegedly attacked the victim, striking and knocking him to the ground, where he lay unmoving. With both victims immobilized, the robbers searched their pockets for cash and phones before fleeing the scene.

On August 1, 2025, Seawood and several accomplices allegedly struck again in the 100 block of East Illinois Street in Streeterville. A 29-year-old guy who lives nearby was struck in the back of the head and knocked to the ground, according to prosecutors. The burglars stole his phone, wallet, and other items.

The following day, Seawood and two accomplices allegedly attacked and robbed two brothers, aged 19 and 22, near Michigan Avenue and Lake Street in the Loop. The brothers, who reside nearby, were going south on Michigan Avenue when Seawood allegedly attacked the younger brother in the face, knocking him down and briefly rendering him unconscious. When the younger brother regained consciousness, he noticed Seawood and two other men rifling through his pockets and snatching his wallet, authorities said.

The older brother told police that one of the perpetrators also assaulted him and knocked him to the ground, but he couldn’t say who hit him. Once he was down, Seawood and the others allegedly searched his pockets for his phone, cash, and credit cards.

Three Chicago police officers later identified Seawood as one of the robbers, according to prosecutors.

According to court documents, Seawood pled guilty before Judge Ursula Walowski to three charges of robbery, two counts of aggravated battery in public, and one act of aggravated battery causing grave bodily harm. Walowski handed four-year sentences for each offense, to be served concurrently. He is set to be released on parole on October 6, 2027.
