A 16-year-old Miami boy has been charged as an adult with second-degree attempted murder in connection with an August shooting in Little Havana over three months ago, according to arrest reports acquired by Local 10 News on Thursday.
According to Miami Police Department officers, Raymond Rodriguez, 16, was initially probed for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, but the charge was later enhanced. According to court records, he is also charged with third-degree grand theft of a handgun.
Miami police said the incident occurred on August 1 at Northwest Ninth Street and 22nd Avenue.
Rodriguez was later apprehended on September 2 by MPD’s Crime Gun Intelligence Unit investigators, according to his arrest record.
Police said they initially arrived at the location at about 10:10 p.m. on August 1 after receiving a report of shots fired. Officers investigated the area but found no victims, witnesses, or prospective suspects, according to the report.
The next day, an officer went to the scene when a man reported visible bullet holes in his 2009 blue Infiniti M35X. According to the report, gunshots appeared to strike the vehicle’s rear windshield and rear driver-side pillar.
Detectives eventually located a second victim, who told them he was walking south on Northwest 22nd Avenue toward Ninth Street just before being shot.
According to the report, the victim observed a white Ford Explorer approaching and parking ahead of him near Northwest 21st Court and Ninth Street. According to investigators, Rodriguez exited the SUV’s passenger side while being driven by an unidentified male.
According to the allegation, Rodriguez, who was allegedly equipped with a semiautomatic handgun, approached the victim with another male. Rodriguez then allegedly took a black handgun from his waistband and fired, according to police.
The victim took cover behind the parked Infiniti and returned fire, striking the vehicle, according to the report. According to authorities, Rodriguez and the other man then got back into the SUV and escaped.
According to the report, a witness who was on FaceTime with the victim during the incident told officers that the victim exclaimed, “Oh s–t,” before running behind a truck as gunshots were fired.
Investigators said they analyzed security footage from the area and used license plate reader data to locate the SUV.
According to the article, further surveillance footage from Rodriguez’s residence shows him leaving his apartment on the night of the shooting wearing a gray hoodie with white lettering, black basketball shorts, and white sneakers.
Police said his outfit matched what detectives saw on video footage of the shooting. According to the report, surveillance footage showed the SUV picking up Rodriguez prior to the incident, and investigators followed the vehicle’s activities throughout the region.
The report states that on September 2, police conducted a search warrant at Rodriguez’s house. Investigators said they found shorts and sneakers that were purportedly worn on the night of the incident, as well as live. 40-caliber ammo and a Glock 43 9mm handgun.
Authorities claimed a records check revealed that the gun had been reported stolen in a separate Miami police investigation.
Detectives interviewed Rodriguez after informing him of his Miranda rights, according to the report. Rodriguez surrendered his rights and agreed to speak with detectives without counsel, according to police.
According to the arrest report, Rodriguez admitted to his role in the shooting and recognized himself in security footage from the incident.
In a separate case, Rodriguez revealed to authorities that he knew the gun was stolen and had paid $950 for it, according to the report.
Rodriguez was being held at Metrowest Detention Center on Thursday morning, with his bond indicated as “to be set.”
It is unclear why Rodriguez fired rounds at this moment.
