A traffic stop involving a tractor-trailer truck on the Pennsylvania Turnpike Monday morning resulted in the discovery of more than 160 pounds of illegal drugs and criminal charges for two brothers, according to State Police charging documents.
Jonathan Martinez, 28, of Adelanto, California, and his brother, Christopher Martinez, 24, of Horizon City, Texas, were stopped by state police in West Pennsboro Township, Cumberland County, around 10:30 a.m. Monday while driving a Peterbilt tractor-trailer truck east on the Turnpike.
According to the criminal complaint affidavits filed against both suspects, the arresting trooper, who was monitoring the highway at the time, spotted the truck over the white line and onto the side of the road several times.
According to the complaint, the trooper spoke with Jonathan Martinez, who was driving the truck with his brother on the passenger side.
“Through general questioning and the paperwork that was provided, I observed indicators of criminal activity,” the trooper wrote in the complaint. The trooper did not provide details of what those indicators were in the affidavit.
A check of the car yielded two duffel bags containing 25 kilos of suspected cocaine—little more than 55 pounds—as well as eight sealed wooden boxes, the trooper said.
After obtaining a search warrant to open and search the boxes, the trooper discovered they contained 12 huge plastic bags of probable methamphetamine weighing 110 pounds.
Field testing revealed that the suspected substances were, in fact, cocaine and meth.
Police charged both males with felony counts of production, distribution, or possession with the intent to produce or deliver controlled narcotics.
Court documents reveal that the brothers are being held in Cumberland County Prison after failing to make bond, which was set at $250,000 each after their arraignments.
The preliminary hearings for both suspects are planned for October 16.
