Gary, Indiana — A Lake County jury has returned guilty verdicts against Thomas Starks for the August 8, 2023 killing of Kajah Wilson and the attempted murder of a second victim on the 300 block of Clark Road in Gary. Lake County Prosecutor Bernard A. Carter announced the decision Friday following a multi-day trial that ended with Starks convicted on several felony counts.

Court records show Starks was found guilty of murder, attempted murder for the intentional effort to take another person’s life, aggravated battery causing severe and lasting disfigurement, and residential burglary.

The Gary Police Department described the conviction as the result of an extensive investigation coordinated by its Real Time Crime Center and Patrol Division, working alongside the Lake County Prosecutor’s Homicide Task Force. The Indiana State Police provided additional support. Investigators also credited community members whose tips and cooperation helped advance the case.

Prosecutor Carter praised Deputy Prosecuting Attorneys Jacob Brandewie and Veronica Gonzales for their commitment and performance at trial. He also recognized Detective Roger Escutia of the Indiana State Police and Sergeant Manuel Green of the Gary Police Department for their roles in the investigation.

Sentencing is set for November 19, 2025, in Lake County Superior Court. Starks remains in custody at the Lake County Jail while awaiting sentencing.
