Election issues and candidates on Nov. 5 ballot

MEIGS COUNTY, Ohio – Election Day is November 5, 2019 and Meigs County will be deciding on a variety of issues along with mayors, trustees and other local offices according to the Meigs County Board of Elections. The Meigs Independent Press will have full coverage of results on election night.

County Wide Issues

On the ballot this fall are three issues that are county wide for voters to decide on. The proposed tax levies are all additional taxes.

911 Operating Expense Levy – The county is seeking more funds for operating Meigs County 911. The language on the ballot reads, “An additional tax for the benefit of Meigs County for the purpose of operating expenses of the 911 system at a rate not exceeding one (1) mill for each one dollar of valuation, which amounts to ten ($0.10) for each one hundred dollars of valuation, for 5 years, commencing in 2019, first due in calendar year 2020.”

Museum Levy – The Meigs County Historical Society is seeking a levy to help with expenses related to the museum. The language of the ballot reads, “An additional levy for the benefit of Meigs County for the purpose of maintenance and operation of a free public museum of art, science or history at a rate not exceeding one-half (0.5) mill for each one dollar of valuation which amounts to five cents ($0.05) for each one hundred dollars of valuation, for 5 years, commencing in 2019, first due in calendar year 2020.”

Animal Shelter Levy – This is a ballot issue reads, “An additional tax for the benefit of Meigs County for the purpose of partnering with the humane society for the expansion of the K9 center to include feline at a rate not exceeding one (1) mill for each one dollar of valuation, which amounts to ten cents ($0.10) for each one hundred dollars of valuation, for 5 years, commencing in 2019, first due in calendar year 2020.”

Villages

Middleport

Middleport Police Levy – Middleport Village is seeking an additional tax of 2 mills for the village police protection.

Middleport Mayor – There are three candidates on the ballot for mayor. Voters will choose one, Joshua M. Ashley, Fred L. Hoffman or Sandy Iannarelli.

Middleport Village Council – Several will appear on the ballot, but voters will be deciding on two seats. One the ballot will be Doulgas R. Dixon, James Buskirk, Susan Page and Ben Reed.

Pomeroy

Pomeroy Village Levy – Pomeroy is seeking a levy for 3 mills for current expenses.

Pomeroy Mayor – With one to be elected, only one candidate will appear on the ballot, Don Anderson.

Pomeroy Council – With two to be elected, only one candidate will appear on the ballot, Maureen Hennessy.

Racine

Fire Protection Levy – The village is seeking an additional levy of 1 mill for fire protection.

Replacement Fire Protection Levy – The village is seeking a replacement levy for .7 mill.

Racine Mayor – One candidate will appear, with one to be elected. The candidate is Julian Scott Hill.

Racine Village Council – Two seats are up for this election with three candidates running, Chad David Hubbard, Fredrick A. Nero, III, and Mony Wood.

Rutland

Rutland Operating Expenses Levy – The village is seeking voters to approve a 2 mills additional tax for the Rutland general operating expenses.

Rutland Village Mayor – Voters will chose one of three candidates, Michael Biggs, Tyler M. Eblin, or Jack W. Peterson.

Rutland Village Council – With two seats available, only one candidate filed, Clifford J. Kennedy.

Rutland Village Council – Four seats are up for the unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2021 and three candidates filed. They are Stephanie Biggs, Stephen Jenkins, and Duane Weber.

Syracuse

Syracuse Village Mayor – Only one candidate filed for the position, Eric D. Cunningham.

Syracuse Village Council – With two seats available, only one person filed for council. Maria Schaefer will appear on the ballot for council.

School Boards

Alexander Local

Board of Education – Two seats are up on the Alexander School Board with five candidates vying for the positions. The candidates are Kathleen S. Dougan, Ralph Harvey, Sr., John Hutchison, Lucy DeLaval Juedes, and Blake Regan.

Governing Board of Educational Service Center – One candidate filed for the position, Gary Dicken.

Eastern Local

Board of Education – With four seats available, three candidates have filed. The candidates are Brandon M. Buckley, Floyd D. Ridenour and Adam Will.

Board of Education – For the unexpired term ending Dec. 31, 2021, there is one seat to fill. Jessica Staley is the only candidate.

Governing Board of the Educational Service Center – There is only one seat. J. Greg Bailey is the only candidate.

Meigs Local

Board of Education – Three seats are up on the Meigs School Board with four candidates filing. Voters will choose from Roger Abbott, Tony B. Hawk, Barbara Anderson Musser or Todd Snowden.

Governing Board of the Educational Service Center – No valid petition was filed.

Southern Local

Board of Education – With two seats available, two candidates will be on the ballot. The candidates are Gary D. Evans and Ashli Peterman.

Athens-Meigs ESC

Governing Board of Educational Service Center – There is one at-large seat up with Jeff Vogt the only candidate.

Townships

Bedford

Bedford Township Trustee – One seat is up for election. Candidates are John Walter Dean and Shawn Hawley.

Bedford Township Fiscal Officer – With one position to fill, Kathy J. Romine is the only candidate on the ballot.

Chester

Replacement Cemetery Levy – The township is seeking a 1 mill replacement levy for operating and maintenance of cemeteries.

Chester Township Trustee – There is one seat available and three candidates for voters to choose from. On the ballot are candidates Jeromee Calaway, Shaun Seth, Philip Raymond Werry.

Chester Township Fiscal Officer – There was no candidate filed, but a write-in is available.

Columbia

Columbia Fire Operating Levy – The township is seeking a .5 mill for the purposes of operating, maintaining equipment and buildings for the fire department.

Columbia Township Trustee – With one seat up, one candidate has filed and that is Rexie Cheadle.

Columbia Township Fiscal Officer – One position is available with two candidates vying for the position. Candidates are Cheri McCollum and Mary Wingo.

Lebanon

Lebanon Township Fire Protection Levy – The township is seeking a 1 mill levy for the purposes of fire protection.

Lebanon Township Trustee – There is one seat available with three candidates will appear on the ballot, Matthew S. Evans, Tyler J. Johnson, and Dale C. Teaford, IV.

Lebanon Township Fiscal Officer – With one position available, one candidate has filed and that is Brenda S. Johnson.

Letart

Letart Township Additional Fire Levy – The township is seeking an additional levy for the purposes of operating, maintenance and services for fire in the amount of 1 mill.

Letart Township Trustee – With one seat to fill, there are two candidates on the ballot. The candidates are Justin Hill and Zachary B. Manuel.

Letart Township Fiscal Officer – With one position, there are two candidates to appear on the ballot, Jenny Manuel and Nathan W. Roush.

Olive

Olive Township Fire Protection Levy Renewal – The township is seeking a 1.5 mill levy renewal for the purposes of fire protection.

Olive Township Trustee – With one seat open, there is one candidate on the ballot and that is Randy Boston.

Olive Township Fiscal Officer – With one to be elected, two are vying for the position. The candidates are Kelly A. Epling and Kaleen Hayman.

Orange

Orange Township Additional Road Maintenance Levy – The township is seeking an additional 2 mill levy for the purposes of road maintenance.

Orange Township Trustee – Two candidates are vying for one seat. The candidates are Ernest Holbert Calaway and Stephen Aaron White.

Orange Township Fiscal Officer – With one to be elected, one candidate will be on the ballot and that is Deborah J. Watson.

Rutland

Rutland Township Trustee – One candidate has filed for the position, Joe Bolin.

Rutland Township Fiscal Officer – One person has filed for the position and that is Opal L. Dyer.

Salem

Salem Township Cemetery Renewal Levy – The township is seeking a .5 renewal levy for the purpose of operating and maintaining the cemeteries.

Salisbury

Salisbury Township Trustee – With one seat to be filled, John Hood is the only candidate on the ballot.

Salisbury Township Fiscal Officer – With one position available, only James William Durst is on the ballot.

Scipio

Scipio Township Cemetery Replacement Levy – The township is seeking a .5 mill replacement levy for the purposes of maintaining and operating cemeteries.

Sutton

Sutton Township Trustee – One seat is up for election. Two candidates will be on the ballot, Marty L. Moriarity and Chuck Mugrage.

Sutton Township Fiscal Officer – Bill Amberger and Jo Ann Crisp are running for the position.
