The California Highway Patrol (CHP) on Friday issued a clarification about its presence near Coast Guard Island in Alameda, emphasizing that officers were on scene to support the U.S. Coast Guard during a constitutionally protected First Amendment gathering.

CHP said its personnel engaged with attendees to help keep the event peaceful and to ensure nearby roadways remained open for emergency access. The agency described its role as focused on safety coordination and traffic management throughout the demonstration.

After the peaceful portion of the gathering concluded, a separate act of violence occurred, the CHP reported, posing risks to Coast Guard members and the public. The Federal Bureau of Investigation has since assumed primary responsibility for the investigation.

Officials have not released additional details about the nature of the incident or whether any arrests have been made. CHP noted it continues to work closely with federal and local partners to safeguard the community around the Coast Guard facility.

The full statement and ongoing updates are available on the CHP’s official news page.
