Brooklyn, NY — An overnight enforcement push by the New York City Sheriff’s Office targeted so-called ghost cars—vehicles with fake, concealed, or altered plates—resulting in 53 tows across Brooklyn this week.
The Sheriff’s Office said teams working across multiple precincts in Kings County removed vehicles for a range of violations, including fraudulent or obscured license plates and expired registrations. The operation is part of a broader citywide effort to keep unregistered and hard-to-trace vehicles off the streets.
Officials say ghost cars are frequently linked to toll evasion and traffic offenses and have, in some cases, been connected to criminal activity. By focusing on plate and registration compliance, the city aims to improve road safety and accountability.
Photos shared by the agency show deputies tagging vehicles in the nighttime hours and tow trucks hauling away rows of impounded cars. Similar compliance patrols are expected to continue in neighborhoods throughout New York City.
Residents who spot vehicles with covered or unreadable plates are encouraged to report them to NYC’s 311 system.
