A local man charged with unlawful imprisonment, assault with intent to do great bodily harm, and domestic violence was sentenced to 426 days in jail and three years probation on February 16 in Ottawa County’s 20th Circuit Court.
Judge Karen Miedema said Angel Vazquez, 31, has already served 426 days. In January, the day before his trial was to begin, he pleaded guilty to one count of assault with intent to cause grave bodily harm less than murder. In exchange, a second charge of assault with intent to cause grave bodily harm, one count of unlawful confinement, and one case of domestic violence were dismissed.
The complaint mentioned a habitual offender, a fourth offense, and notice.
“I (would) just like to apologize to the victim,” Vazquez said during sentencing. “I’ve been seeking counseling through (Ottawa County Community Mental Health). They’re even prescribing me medicine … I’ve seen a change in my mind and the way I think … I’m willing to change and I’m changing.”
Miedema initially intended to reject the plea agreement after reading a pre-sentencing investigation report, but she ultimately opted against it.
“It’s up to you to continue to do the right thing and obey the law and the rules on probation, or you’ll be back here and we’ll have another sentence,” Miedema said. “Don’t disappoint us.”
Vazquez is accused of attacking a 23-year-old woman whom he had previously dated at Windmill Lakes Apartments in Holland Township in December 2024. To escape, the victim reportedly leaped from a second-floor balcony. According to detectives from the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, Vazquez was armed and fled the scene. He was later arrested and charged.
The Sentinel does not name the victims of domestic assault.
Vazquez also agreed to a plea deal in 2018 after allegedly stabbing two individuals with a steak knife during a brawl. He was sentenced to one year in jail for two counts of severe assault, a misdemeanor.
