Police: N.J. auto shop worker arrested after customer’s car ends up crushed

An auto repair shop employee was detained Monday after allegedly having a customer’s car crushed and scrapped without their knowledge, according to police.

In January, the client called the Bloomingdale Police Department to report that their vehicle was missing. They had dropped it off at the shop for repair some months ago and were unable to retrieve it despite multiple attempts, according to the department.

Detectives later discovered that the customer’s car had been sold to a private company, which then crushed and scrapped it, according to investigators.

According to police, a 49-year-old woman who works at the shop impersonated the car’s owner and sold it to a scrapyard. Officers contacted the scrapyard and determined that the vehicle had already been crushed and transported to an out-of-state facility.

The lady was apprehended Monday and charged with theft of a motor vehicle and impersonation, police said. She was processed and then freed pending her hearing in Passaic County Superior Court.
