Houston-area firefighter taken into custody in Bryan on insurance fraud charge

A Houston-area firefighter has been taken into custody in Bryan on charges of insurance fraud, according to police records acquired by KBTX.

Grant Theodore Underwood Jr., 36, was arrested on Tuesday and put into the Brazos County Jail. According to jail records, he was freed on Wednesday after posting a $30,000 bond.

According to the arrest report, Underwood is accused of committing a vehicle burglary at a local motel last year. He initially reported to the officers the theft of approximately $8,500 worth of personal goods from his vehicle. The alleged items included fireman boots, an air mask, AirPods, cowboy boots, a laptop computer, and workout gear.

Bryan police officers examined hotel security footage, cell phone records, and information Underwood provided to his insurance company to create a timeline of events. According to the report, the evidence led police to infer that the reported burglary did not take place as described and that Underwood gave false information.

According to the arrest report, Underwood works as a firefighter in Harris County. His present employment situation was not readily known. Investigators also cited a statement from his supervisor, claiming it demonstrated contradictions between Underwood’s story to law enforcement and remarks made to an assistant fire chief at the department.

The case is still under investigation.
