2 detained in Horizon City on charge of endangering an elderly person

Two people were detained Monday night in Horizon City and charged with harming an elderly person after police discovered drug paraphernalia in their home.

Roel Contreras, 46, and Nancy Altamirano, 43, were detained after authorities went to a probable domestic verbal altercation on the 17000 block of Darrington Road, near the Horizon Golf Course.

Officers stated that when they attempted to conduct a welfare check on the elderly individual, they spoke with Contreras, who identified himself as the caretaker.

Officers reported spotting drug paraphernalia, such as glass pipes containing methamphetamine residue, before discovering Altamirano with the elderly individual hiding in a bedroom.

According to jail records, both Contreras and Altamirano were placed in the El Paso County Downtown Jail and charged with abandoning or endangering a child, an elderly person, or a disabled person. Their bond was set at $2,000.

According to jail records, Contreras secured a personal recognizance bond, but no date was posted indicating when he was released.
