A shooting at a Duncanville bowling alley early Sunday morning killed one man and injured another, prompting a manhunt that ended with the use of police drone technology.
Bowling alley shooting
At 12:03 a.m., Duncanville Police officers responded to a shooting complaint at Red Bird Lanes, located in the 1114 block of South Main Street. Upon arrival, officers discovered an adult male near the front entrance with multiple gunshot wounds. The man was sent to Methodist Charlton Medical Center, where he eventually died.
While officers were investigating the area, another gunshot victim arrived at the same hospital. According to officials, the second victim is in serious but stable condition and is expected to live.
Witnesses told detectives that the shooter fled on foot shortly following the gunfire. Officers set up a perimeter and used the department’s “Drone as First Responder” (DFR) program. The drone successfully located the offender in an open field west of the 900 block of South Main Street, allowing officers to move in and make the arrest.
Suspect identified
Torry Ray Smith, the culprit, has been recognized by police. A weapon suspected to have been used in the shooting was found near the arrest site. The Duncanville Police Department believes this is an isolated event that poses no ongoing threat to the public, according to a statement.
Smith is currently being held at the Tri-City Regional Jail on a pending murder accusation, with further charges possible. The deceased’s identification has not yet been published.
