Michigan Mom Charged After Husband Found In Basement

A 31-year-old Michigan woman was arrested this week after police say she shot her husband several times inside their Battle Creek home, later telling detectives she opened fire to “put him out of his misery.”

Andrea Graham was arrested Monday afternoon and is now facing charges of open murder and felony firearm crime in the death of her husband, Alan Graham.

The incident occurred around 4:30 p.m. on the 100 block of South Ridgeway Drive, approximately 120 miles west of Detroit. According to the Battle Creek Police Department, officers arriving on the scene were welcomed by Andrea Graham outside the home.

She directed them into a basement passage, where first responders discovered Alan Graham with gunshot wounds to his upper body. Despite attempts at lifesaving, he was declared dead at the spot.

Court documents released by the Battle Creek Enquirer paint a bleak picture of the material seized from the home. Investigators discovered a 9 mm pistol and many shot shells scattered throughout the house, implying that the fight had place elsewhere.

Police said they discovered shattered glass from a broken picture frame on the victim’s body.

While in detention, Graham allegedly provided responding cops a candid description of the shooting.

“I shot him a couple of times to make sure he was out of his misery because I didn’t want him to suffer slowly,” she allegedly claimed, according to statements referenced in a WOOD-TV story.

Graham claimed she acted in self-defense, telling officials that her husband was strangling her when she discharged the handgun.

However, in court records, detectives indicated that they did not find physical injuries on her compatible with strangulation, and that the physical evidence at the site did not support her version of events.

Graham pleaded not guilty on her initial appearance in Calhoun County Court. Her defense attorney stated that she is a stay-at-home mother of two with no previous felony convictions.

She is now being held without bond and is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause conference on April 22.
