A 6-year-old boy suffered a gunshot wound Friday night at a park in North Toledo after what police believe was stray gunfire from a nearby dispute.
Sgt. Mohamad Nasser, a spokesman for the Toledo Police Department, said Saturday that the child was struck “in the lower extremities” and received treatment at a nearby hospital for injuries described as “serious but not life-threatening.”
Police crews responded around 9:30 p.m. to a shooting report at Joe E. Brown Park and later went to a residential property several blocks away, where officers detained multiple individuals. That response was broadcast live on the Reelz cable television show On Patrol: Live.
According to Sgt. Nasser, a large group had been arguing in the park while using Orbi guns — toy weapons also known as gel blasters that shoot small, water-filled pellets. The situation escalated when someone involved pulled out a real firearm and fired multiple shots.
Radio traffic captured during the television broadcast suggested witnesses knew the shooter’s residence. However, Sgt. Nasser said Saturday afternoon that officers had not made any arrests, and the investigation remained ongoing.
