2 bus lines in Shaler Township could be eliminated under Pittsburgh Regional Transit’s Bus Line Refresh plan

A plan by Pittsburgh Regional Transit could leave riders in Shaler Township without reliable transportation. Now, both riders and local leaders are urging PRT to reconsider the proposal.

As part of its “Bus Line Refresh,” the agency plans to eliminate two routes serving Shaler.

Residents say that while PRT views this as a cost-saving move, it could significantly impact commuters’ ability to maintain their livelihoods.

Though they may appear to be just two among thousands of routes, the Route 2 Mt. Royal and the P13 Mt. Royal Flyer along Mount Royal Boulevard are essential for many riders.

“It’s the most important bus line, quite honestly,” rider Autumn Krohe said. “I can’t get to work, I can’t get my medications. I live in Shaler, and the only way to go to and from is the bus line.”

PRT says its broader goals include improving reliability and increasing service frequency, and it cites low ridership as the main reason for considering the cuts.

“We sent a letter to the PRT board. We said, please, do not do this. We need this service for the community,” said Shaler Township Commissioner Josh Fleitman. “We’re all urging PRT to think creatively here. What could it look like to keep this line open?”

Supporters say smaller buses, revised schedules, and adjusted routes could be viable solutions. For them, having some level of service is far better than none.

“Historically, this route has played a critical role in connecting Shaler Township to the region,” Fleitman said.

Those advocating to preserve the routes say they are continuing to apply pressure to ensure buses keep running to and from this area of Shaler.

A PRT spokesperson emphasized that no service cuts have been finalized. The agency plans to hold public hearings where riders can express concerns about specific route reductions.

If approved, the Bus Line Refresh plan could be put into effect in 2027.
