2 people killed in head-on collision on SR 40 in Ocala

A head-on collision on State Road 40 early Wednesday morning killed two people and temporarily closed the road in both directions.

At about 1:57 a.m. on Wednesday, the Florida Highway Patrol was notified of a tragic accident near the intersection of State Road 326 and State Road 40/East Silver Springs Boulevard. According to the organization’s list of active calls, FHP units were called at 2 a.m. and arrived on the scene by 2:25 a.m.

According to FHP, an unnamed driver was driving a sedan westbound on State Road 40 when it failed to handle a curve to the right and crossed the centerline.

As a result, the sedan collided head-on with a sport utility vehicle driven by a 43-year-old woman from Silver Springs.

After the collision, the vehicle burst into flames. The driver, who has yet to be named by FHP, was pronounced dead at the site.

The Silver Springs woman was taken to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

FHP claims that they are still notifying both persons’ next of kin.

According to the Marion County Sheriff’s Office, the deadly collision forced E Hwy 40 to be closed in both directions at its intersection with SR 326.

According to the FHP’s active calls list, the roadway is clear as of 6:40 a.m., with no traffic blocks in force.

There are currently no additional facts available about the incident or the traffic flow in the region.

According to FHP accident data, at least 23 fatalities have occurred on Marion County roads this year.
