A FedEx driver received recognition for stepping in to help an Indiana State Police trooper who was under attack on a rural road in Ripley County.
ISP said Larry Webster II, of Aurora, was initially involved in a crash in northern Jefferson County on US 421 near Michigan Road on Nov. 19. He is accused of leaving the scene after that crash.
He is then accused of rear-ending a second vehicle on US 421. When the driver stepped out of the vehicle, Webster allegedly struck it again, hitting the driver who was standing nearby.
Webster fled, but Sgt. David Meyer caught up with him on Old Michigan Road in Ripley County.
During the arrest, Webster allegedly pinned Meyer to the ground, attempted to gouge his eyes, and tried to grab his gun. Meyer suffered a broken shoulder.
Stanton Loder III was making deliveries in the area when he noticed the struggle, which ISP said could have turned into a life-or-death situation.
Loder restrained Webster, allowing Meyer to place him in handcuffs. Webster now faces multiple charges in two counties.
ISP Superintendent Anthony Scott presented Loder with the award on Tuesday.
